About Dr. Joseph Henriques

Dr. Joseph Henriques, Tysons Campus Pastor at McLean Bible Church in Virginia, believes that joy, meant to be life’s overarching emotion and primary source of strength, is found through healthy relationships in community with others. He is committed to education and training that enables secular and religious people alike to achieve optimum joy in living.

During his six and one-half years as Dean of Moody Graduate School in Chicago, student enrollment more than doubled to a population of approximately 500 students, new curricula was adopted, a faculty performance review was implemented, and a stable financial base was established. Approximately 35 % of faculty, staff and students were of various ethnic backgrounds.

Before going to Moody Graduate School, Dr. Henriques was President of New Enterprise Education and Training Services. Working as a consultant for LEAR Corporation in Strasburg, Virginia, he assessed the training needs of managers, supervisors and employees, and provided appropriate education for each respective group. Mediation sessions he facilitated enabled employees and management to clarify root causes of misunderstandings, reconcile differences and utilize diversity of strengths. A corporate values statement was developed at a senior management off-site. Other clients included the Office of Personnel Management, Defense Logistics Agency, Massanutten Military Academy, Lord Fairfax Community College, and the Internal Revenue Service.

His co-authored book, Cultural Change and Your Church: Helping Your Church Thrive In A Diverse Society, speaks to a deep concern for the well-being of America’s immigrant and multicultural population. In his workshop, Designing Your Intercultural Outreach, church teams learn how to design and develop an intercultural ministry of their choosing. In other workshops, such as Dialoguing Faith With Those of Other Faiths, participants learn how to explain the rationale of their faith in ways that make sense to a non-Christian audience.

Dr. Henriques’ own bicultural and bilingual family background (Portuguese father and Puerto Rican mother) provides a reservoir of true-to-life insights for his education presentations as well as for graduate courses he has taught:  Intercultural Relations in A Multicultural Society, A Survey of World Religions, and Multicultural Perspectives. On the Moody Broadcasting Network, Dr. Henriques’ commentaries and program specials highlight the ways and means of helping secular and religious America understand the message of Jesus Christ.

As Wing Chaplain of the 128th Air Refueling Wing in Milwaukee, WI, Chaplain Henriques (Lt Col) provided spiritual guidance and support for 900 unit military members and their families. In his career as a Chaplain, he presented a spectrum of workshops, including Personality Diversity (using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for effective teamwork), Quality Leadership, Cultural Diversity, Battle Stress, and Suicide Awareness and Prevention. He was also lead facilitator for commanders’ off-sites for strategic planning and developing values, mission, and vision statements.

Other experiences as a minister and missionary included Youth and Music Director, co-founder and Director of New Life Bible Camp, College and Career Director, founding Pastor of an International and Portuguese Church and founding Director of the International Christian School in Portugal, Senior Pastor of a church in North America, and Director of People Of the World which provided training in developing intercultural relationships.
